The Birth of Coffee: Legend has it that a young goatherd in the Abyssinian region of Kaffa (modern day Ethiopia) noticed his herd becoming unusually frisky after eating some bright red berries. After trying some himself, he found that they had the same stimulating effect on him. A monk from a neighboring monastery also tried these berries after he found the young goatherd in this state, and to his amazement, he also found that the berries helped keep him and others alert during their night prayers and thus spread the use of coffee.
1000 A.D.
Introduction of Ethiopian Coffee to the World: 1000 A.D.: Arab traders bring coffee back to their homeland and cultivate the plant for the first time on plantations. They also began to boil the beans, creating a drink they call "qahwa" (literally, that which prevents sleep).
1972
Company Founded: Mr. Mamo Telila, after working nearly two decades in the coffee industry, founded Addis Exporter, one of the oldest and most respected privately held coffee export company in Ethiopia.
